Great Homeschool Moment

So, today we were talking about the way artists render water in their art. We've been reading "The Story of Ping" with Five in a Row and talking about the way the illustrator used wavy lines to indicate water. I got a book called "Water Through the Eyes of Artists" from the library. (out of print, wish I could get my hands on it!). It is several paintings from different artists that show a wide variety of ways to paint water. When we got to the painting shown in the middle photo, Josh said, "I like that one. Wait! Wait, Mommy. I have to get something!" And went running around the house. He finally located what he wanted, a book we own called "The Lion and The Little Red Bird." He opened to the page shown in the bottom photo and said that the painting had reminded him of this page in his book. Amazing. A connection. Completely unforced, came spontaneously and naturally. Confirmation that this is indeed the right choice for our family.

Ah Jennie, that's great. It reminds me of a book my mom used to read to us - The Goodnight Book by Eloise Wilken - anyway, I was telling my sister about my reading it to the girls and she said "yea, my favorite part was the little toy alligator in the bathtub - how do we retain stuff like that. I LOVE that Josh made that connection. Yay for you and your commitment to homeschooling!

That is so awesome! What an exciting thing to watch our little ones minds work.
The other day, Brookie got sent to her room for being whiny and fussy. As she is in there I am going about the task I was doing and a little bit later she comes out carrying two glass unicorn figurines that she has in her room. #1 unicorn is a single unicorn that she painted at Ceramic cafe. #2 unicorn is one from my childhood of two unicorns and one is nuzzling the other. So she comes out to me with the unicorns behind her back and says so sweetly, "mom, you shouldn't leave me like this" (as she presents unicorn #1). "You should be like this" (as she presents unicorn #2). All I could think of in my amusement was, did my 4 year old just use visual aides to convey a point to me! Amazing these little ones are!
